Greater Things | September 12, 2022

I started my career back in the early 1980’s.

The above line has existed on my computer screen, curser flashing, for hours now.  1980’s? That seems like a life-time ago. My mind started racing with memories of when I stood in front of my first class (8th graders) that day in sunny Florida, stomach churning so loudly I thought for sure the student in the back row heard it. I remember looking out over the vast faces, an overwhelming feeling of what a huge responsibility it was to teach so many kids. I was determined to make a difference.  Truth is, I got it wrong plenty of times.

God has laid it on my heart today that I must cast myself whole-heartedly upon His mercy and remember that there will be times, this side of heaven, when I just won’t get it right. This is true for all of us.  God asks one thing of us:  trust Him, as we seek His wisdom in our lives. If we had it all together and could do it all on our own, we wouldn’t need Him.  And life without Jesus Christ our Savior would be empty and scary—not to mention it would lead to eternal death and damnation.

At Greater Things, the students recite Psalm 138:8 at the start of our praise and worship time.  They know it by heart and can sign it (American Sign Language).  “The LORD will fulfill His purpose for me.”  He has a purpose for each one of us, and as long as we seek Him first, we can’t mess it up or cause it to never come to fruition. Daily, I look out over the 20 faces that currently make up Greater Things and I realize the responsibility God has given those of us who work with these children.  It’s a huge responsibility.  But, we can count on HIM leading and guiding us. We will seek HIS presence and HIS direction as we continue on this journey, together.

This week is our fifth week at Greater Things.  The children have put Galatians 5:22 to memory (the fruit of the Spirit), along with several songs that talk about the love of God.  This week, they will learn John 3:16, and the books of the Old and New Testament through a song.  The children are starting to understand the importance of their academics, and we have several students who would benefit greatly if they had someone to listen to them read aloud and discuss their book.  Maybe God is tugging at your heart to volunteer for an hour a week or more!  We would love to have you!  Please reach out to any one of us who calls Greater Things our ministry, our calling.  We would love to talk to you about the needs we have and how you can be a part of it all!  God bless you.
