Worshiping God Through Giving

December 07, 2019

As believers, the stewardship of our finances is a tremendous—and often overlooked—area of our lives where we can faithfully proclaim the gospel. Giving strengthens our devotion to Christ and frees us to live open-handedly with the gifts God gives us. We trust in Him and His provision instead of our perceived self-sufficiency. As people of faith, we give faithfully and generously. As church members, we covenant that we will give cheerfully, regularly, and generously to the support of the church, the relief of the poor, and the spread of the Gospel both in our city and through all nations (2 Cor. 8-9).

Knowing everything we receive is a gift from the Lord and belongs to Him, and knowing that He desires that we participate with Him in His work, we must continually challenge ourselves to grow in our surrender and trust in His provision. The following are some examples of how some families think about their giving, in the hopes that one or more might resonate with you:

“I give at least as much to the church as I spend on my gym membership each month, to recognize that my spiritual health is equally important to my physical health.”

“My spouse and I budget our weekly gift to the church to match what we spend on groceries.”

“My family gives as much to the church as we spend on extra-curricular activities for our kids…We want them to understand that we value church as much as we value sports, music, art, etc….Every time they want to do something new, we sit down and figure out if we can swing it, knowing that if it costs more, it will increase our giving to the church too.”

“I used to give to the church whatever was left at the end of the month, but now it’s the first thing I budget. Basically, I’ve decided that it matters, so I’ve made it a priority in my giving and spending.”

“We like to give ten percent of our combined income to support God’s work in our community through the church. We budget for the 10, and we budget for extra giving beyond that so that we can practice the spiritual discipline of generosity when the opportunity arises.”

“My husband and I use the church app to give during the service every week. We want to participate in the corporate act of giving and view it as worship.”

There are many easy ways for you to give, including one-time or automated giving online or ACH transfers, mail-in, and of course, during our worship services. Our office is open during regular business hours, and will accept donations during that time as well. If you have any questions about how to set up app, online, or automated giving, please see our other articles on How to Give Online and How to Use Text Giving.
