Old Fort Baptist
Mission Ministry Opportunities
In the following pages, you will find some areas God is moving to advance His kingdom. Some of these ministries are brand new; others have been in existence for years. Some are in our own back yard; others are thousands of miles away. There are opportunities from age 6 to 100. The variety of these ministries mirror Paul’s description of the body of believers- many different parts, many different spiritual gifts, all working together in unity.  The common factor in all of these ministries is an opportunity for Christ’s love to be shown and proclaimed. The Call is going out- will you respond?

Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry.  HFHI seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world and make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action.  Habitat has built more than 95,000 houses around the world.  Millard and Linda Fuller founded the organization in 1976.

Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple decent houses with the help of the homeowner, volunteer labor and donations of money or materials.  The homeowners’ monthly mortgage payments are used to build other Habitat houses.  Homeowners invest hundreds of hours of their own labor--sweat equity—into building their Habitat house and the houses of others.  If you are interested in eliminating poverty housing, please contact Habitat for Humanity International at 1-800-422-4228 or www.habitat.org

International Mission Trips

Over the past year, God has led Old Fort Baptist Church to be  involved in international mission trips to Honduras through the North Carolina Baptist Men Mission Teams.  Old Fort has sent several construction and medical teams to hurricane stricken Honduras. Ongoing plans hope to include our youth and to continue this outreach, as God leads.   If you are interested in participating on an international mission team in areas of construction, medical or evangelism, or would like to support the effort financially, please contact Tom Talkie at 875-1191, or Mark Redwine at 552-7796.

International Seafarer Ministry
Charleston, South Carolina

Ships from more than 140 countries visit South Carolina’s three international ports each year.  Their port calls range from half a day to several months.  These seafarers are far from home, often overworked and underpaid, isolated from family and friends for long periods of time.  Ministry to seafarers involves meeting basic needs.  They need to shop, write letters to family and make international phone calls.  Some need medical guidance and friendship.  They need Christ as the anchor of their souls.
Volunteer opportunities include providing refreshments, books, magazines, movies, clean and in good repair clothing.  Personal involvement volunteers can take a group of seafarers shopping, play games such as volleyball, table tennis or basketball.  Gift bags can be prepared including hand knitted caps, personal car items and a copy of the New Testament in the seafarer’s language.  Friendship is most important in sharing with seafarers thirsting for agape love.

Interested in being a volunteer?  Contact Tim Rice, Missionary to the Charleston International Seafarer Ministry, at 723-4571 Ext. 203 or 554-6695.

Meals on Wheels

Many elderly and/or disabled persons in our community depend on Meals on Wheels for a nutritious noon meal Monday through Friday.  Could you give one or two hours each week to help provide this service?  Assistance is needed both to deliver and to help with the packaging of meals.  Teams of two deliver meals and children are welcome to accompany you.  Training will be provided.  Call the Meals on Wheels office at 873-8224, Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., for any other information.  Please come and lend a hand.  You’ll be very glad you did! Contact Elizabeth Davis at 873-1210.

Medical Outreach Mission Clinic

Every Thursday evening, an exciting ministry opportunity exists. At St. Paul's Episcopal Church, a medical clinic operates to serve the underprivileged of this area. This is a ripe field for harvest, but the workers are few. Many people each session come for more than medical help - they are searching for an answer. A unique opportunity exists to minister, serve, pray with, and share the Good News. You need no medical training, only open ears to hear God's call, and the obedience to respond.  Contact Mrs. Jackie Leinster at 871-4299 or Mark Redwine at 552-7796.

Migrant Ministry

Each year approximately 17,000 migrants, usually from South and Central America and the Caribbean, work in S.C. (estimate by S.C. Employment Security). Charleston Baptist Association sponsors a ministry to the over 5,000 migrants who come to the Sea Islands to work each spring. Volunteers are needed from late spring to mid summer to minister to these men, women and children. Opportunities include, but are not limited to: nutritious mid morning snacks for the field workers; evening activities: back yard bible clubs for workers' children, soccer with the men, home economics, health and hygiene classes, Bible studies with men or women, showing "Jesus" film or other evangelistic movies. Snacks are needed for all the above activities. Contact Eileen Miller 851-1250 for more information.

Health Kits (due in spring)
1 toothbrush (factory sealed)
1 toothpaste (6 oz. or more), 1 soap (bath size), 1 wash cloth, 1 comb, 1 bath towel

Mission Friends

Mission Friends is an outreach ministry of WMU for preschool age children.  At Old Fort, we offer classes for children ages 2-3 years and 4-5 years.  Both classes meet on Wednesday evenings from 6:30-7:30 in the education building.

Each month our Mission Friends curriculum introduces missionary couples from around the world.  Our leaders strive to have the children remember to pray for these families and learn exciting facts about the different cultures.  We encourage mission outreach projects such as collecting food for needy families in our community and visiting nursing homes.  Most importantly we stress that God wants children to tell others about His love for them.  We hope to see your preschooler there.

Mobile Medical Clinics

There are many medically underserved areas in the tri-county area. This presents another opportunity to minister and share the love of Jesus through local medical missions. The concept is to take medical/ evangelism teams to an underserved area for a Saturday clinic/gospel share.  If you have any medical training, or a leading towards medical missions- please pray about this new opportunity. Contact Mark Redwine at 552-7796.

Multi-Housing Ministry

Are you interested in reaching the unchurched?  This ministry may be for you, only 4% of Multi-housing residents are actively involved in a church.  Also, 35.7% of Americans live in Multi-housing communities.  There are a variety of ways to be involved: Adult Bible studies, Children’s Ministries, Block parties, Prayer walking, etc.  These are just a few ideas, there are many other options.  These activities could be done monthly or more frequently depending on the volunteers interested in pursuing this ministry.

With the adult ministries a person could lead bible studies for single, married or seniors.  The children’s ministries could be using puppets, clowns, creative storytelling or arts and crafts.  Block parties could include doing a free cookout for the community and then having literature about the church to handout.

Prayer walking involves walking around the community while praying for the people living there. For more information and volunteer opportunities, contact Carey Reichardt at 821-1453.

Palmetto Health Hospice

Pregnancy Ministry

There are a variety of ways to be involved in this ministry.  If you have time the crisis pregnancy centers are always looking for volunteers.  There is a need of maternity clothes for women, baby clothes and baby furniture.  Prayer warriors are also needed to pray for those involved in this ministry and the women who come into the centers.  It is the wish of these centers that they can share the unchanging message of God’s love for them and of His grace.
Some centers offer free pregnancy testing, counseling, clothing for mother and baby, educational programs, as well as providing alternatives to abortion.  Two of the centers involved in this type of ministry are the Alpha Pregnancy Center (Nancy Mixon/875-5623) and Zoe Outreach Ministries in Eutawville (Phyllis Kirby/1-877-992-4963).  At the Zoe Outreach Ministries a specific need is anyone that can crochet or knit baby booties are always needed.  For more information and volunteer opportunities, contact Carey Reichardt at 821-1453 or Mark Redwine at 552-7796.

Royal Ambassadors

Royal Ambassadors is a program for boys that teaches them to understand and undertake Christ’s mission as their mission.  This means helping boys:
· Become aware of the needs of the world and how God proposes to satisfy these needs
· Recognize that Christians in groups and as individuals are the instruments God uses to meet needs in the world
· Commit themselves, including their vocation, to God to meet these needs
· Meet these needs through prayer, giving and engaging in meaningful individual and group action.
In short, within the church Royal Ambassadors is a mentoring process in which adult Christian men teach young boys about the importance of missions in the church and outside the church.  This includes home and foreign missions.

This is also a time in which boys can be taught about the outdoors and take part in field trips and camping activities.  The ages that take part in RAs at OFBC are 1st through 5th grades.  We meet on Wednesday night during our service times (6:30pm).  Contact Roland Evans for more information and opportunities to participate in this ministry.

Youth on Mission!

The youth of Old Fort Baptist Church have an opportunity to learn about missions once a month at the Wednesday Youth Blast Meeting. That night becomes "Missions Blast"! The meeting takes place in the fellowship hall starting at 6:45 P.M.  Missions education is the focus of this meeting. Opportunities to "do" missions take place at different times during the month.

Some of the activities include a partnership with the Connie Maxwell Children's Home and ministry to the International Seafarer Center. A free winter coat distribution allows youth to give back to the community and to share the Gospel. Hands on missions can provide youth with a missions foundation for spiritual growth. All youth are invited to attend!
